International Conscientious Objectors’ Day 2024

Wednesday, 15th May is International Conscientious Objectors’ Day. To mark this day, there will be a Meeting for Worship at 2.30 pm organised by Staffordshire Area Quaker Meeting at the Quaker Service Memorial which is located at the National Memorial Arboretum.

This is a challenging time especially with the situation in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine. Conscientious Objection is an important issue for some of those involved in military action in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine. The same was true for Quakers in WW2 who followed a number of directions. Our Quaker Memorial commemorates the conscientious objectors who served in the Friends Ambulance Unit and Friends Relief Service. We can all unite there for this Meeting for Worship to witness for peace.

Staffordshire Area Quaker Meeting representatives will be at the Arboretum main reception from 1.45 pm to meet and greet Friends. We will depart from the Arboretum building at 2.00 pm to walk to the memorial site. There is limited seating at the memorial – you may wish to bring a cushion or folding chair for the Meeting for Worship which will last for half an hour – weather permitting.

There is a ½ mile walk to the Memorial. We are arranging a buggy for those with mobility needs. Please contact us for a place. The National Memorial Arboretum also have wheelchairs and mobility scooters for hire if contacted in advance. The charge for mobility scooters is £10. We ask you to arrange this hire for yourselves.( Tel 01283 245 100 )

The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) is open from 9.00-5.00. There is no charge for admission, parking is £4 if booked in advance on the NMA website www.thenma.org.uk or £6 payable on the day. There are two car parks; the car park at the main site has spaces for blue badge holders, drop off and general parking spaces. The overflow car park is a ten minute walk from the Arboretum entrance. If meetings have arranged a minibus, please contact the NMA in advance on 01283 245100 so that they can advise you about parking.

The Arboretum has a good café with a wide selection of food and drink.
