Silent Vigil and a minute’s silence organised by Stoke and Newcastle Quaker Meeting and South Cheshire and North Staffordshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (SCANSCND)
Friday 9th August, 10.45am to 11.45am, outside the Guildhall, Newcastle under Lyme, ST5 1PW
79 years ago, during World War 2, atomic bombs destroyed these two cities. Countless perished. The only remains of many were their shadows burned into stone.
A number of Friends and members of SCANSCND gathered to hold a silent vigil to remember the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Quakers are committed to working for peace and were early supporters of CND. Quaker activist Eric Baker, was a founder member of CND although he is better known for being a co-founder of Amnesty International.
